Refitted in 12 weeks without closing a day

Drake's flagship on Savile Row runs daily sales, made-to-order fittings, stock and back-of-house in one shop. Over time the old layout had started to slow all of it down.

The brief: make the store work better for customers and staff without losing the character Savile Row is known for. The condition: the shop stayed open throughout.

We refitted the 120 sq m flagship in 12 weeks around trading: shopfront, lighting, flooring, bespoke joinery and a reworked made-to-order area.

Nine checks before you refit a shop that stays open

  1. Before you plan

    • Write down your trading hours and busiest days. The programme is built around them, not the other way round.
    • Check consent for the shopfront early. Planning, signage and conservation rules can set the timeline.
    • Decide where stock goes during the works. Protected storage is cheaper than damaged cloth.
  2. Before work starts

    • Work in zones, so only one part of the floor is closed at a time.
    • Book deliveries and noisy tasks outside opening hours. Customers should never hear a drill.
    • Keep escape routes clear and signed every day the shop is open.
  3. Before you reopen a zone

    • Test the lighting with real stock on display, not on empty shelves.
    • Insist the contractor snags first. Staff should move into a finished space.
    • Walk the customer route end to end before the zone goes back into trade.

Questions about retail fit-outs

Can a shop stay open during a refit?

Yes, if the works are planned around trading. Here deliveries and work schedules were planned so the store stayed open throughout and the neighbours were not affected.

How much does a luxury retail fit-out cost in London?

This Savile Row refit came to about £410K for 120 sq m with a new shopfront, bespoke timber fixtures and new lighting. More in our guide to retail fit-out in London.

Who designs the fixtures and rails?

We design and make them as one team, so every rail and shelf is drawn for the stock it will hold and priced before it is built.

How long does a flagship store refit take?

Twelve weeks for this 120 sq m flagship, including the shopfront, lighting, flooring and bespoke joinery, with the store open the whole time.

Does a new shopfront need consent?

Usually. A new shopfront normally needs planning permission, signage can need advertisement consent, and conservation areas get closer scrutiny. We check what applies before the design is fixed.
